Wake

horizontal rule

Many boating accidents are caused by wakes from other boats.  A wake is the wave action caused by the displacement of water as a vessel moves through the water.  A big wake can easily capsize a small boat or damage boats and property along the shore.  Did you know that a cubic yard of water weighs almost a ton?  To give you an idea the size of a cubic yard, it's about one fifth the capacity of a regular dump truck.  The next time you are out boating, take a look at your wake and estimate how many tons of water you have set into motion.  Then you will know why boat wakes can cause untold damage, serious personal injuries and even death.  Remember boaters, you are responsible for any damage, injury or death that is caused by or results from your wake.

This type of accident senseless, causes insurance rates to rise and can be avoided. Always cruise around docks, anchorage's and narrow channels at minimum speed. How do you know what a minimum speed is?  The answer is look behind your boat and check the wake. If there is still a wake, slow down some more.  When you are cruising in the intercoastal water way keep a sharp look out for small boats that are ahead of  you.  If your wake could put that boat in harm's way, slow down.  It's just a courtesy that experienced boat operators extend to one another.
